I wanted to invite all of you who have visited our site in the last few weeks to check out initial simulation model (Model 1) which provides a simple, but powerful, construct for safety culture. It turns out this construct is deceptively simple as discussed in the "Extra Credit" section of the Model 1 Guide. This section refers to several studies of "well-educated" adults (translated: graduate level engineers and MBA students) who are allowed to "manage" a simple stock and flow model comparable to what we use for safety culture. Very small percentages of the students are able to achieve specified goals for managing the level of the stock even with incentives and multiple chances to run the model. Aside from wondering where our higher education dollars are going, the studies point to the challenges associated with managing dynamic systems - even simple ones.
Download our Model 1 and see how you fare in managing the level of safety culture. And report back with a message on our forum.
Good luck!
